Originally Vail was the summer home of the Ute Indians, who would depart the area during harsh winters. The first homesteader arrived in 1881, and sheep pastures & ranchers continued to populate the area for the summers for almost another century. Once the Ute Indians were driven out by miners seeking wealth and lumbermen stripping forests to build railroads & mines, legend has it that the Ute set "Spite Fires" that burned thousands of acres in Colorado....possibly leaving open slopes that now serve to attract international crowds to ski the mountains. Vail now has 5,289 skiable acres, 350,000 acres of National Forest surrounding the village, and 1,100 acres of open space owned by the town for recreational use. The town's name was born from it's access: Charlie Vail, State Highway Engineer, paved through the valley just before WWII. But the town itself was a creation from inspired individuals who turned their warfare training into a positive dream for more to experience the freedom of skiing. Camp Hale was the training ground for ski warfare for WWII, and this led Pete Seibert & Earl Eaton back after the war to prospect their vision to use the open bowls as a ski resort. To inspire investors, the initial lure was $10,000 for a Vail home site, lifetime lift pass & a limited partnership in Vail Associates. Can you imagine??
Vail's invention was an explosion of success, and what began as a humble start is now a lavish community that brings the joy of nature to millions. Hiking & biking are obvious summer activities, and summertime lift operations open up to adventures atop Vail. The world's highest botanical garden - The Betty Ford Gardens, is the backdrop for dance & music culture (Bravo! & the Vail Dance Festival) hosted in the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater. Come be leisurely & dine & shop or experience the town in full adventure!
